Shop Shots Behind the Scenes
Celastic, a material used to make puppets, has become unable to stick to itself. But Judy has found a way to replace the adhesive properties.
Puppet Making Highlights
Judy’s puppets begin as clay sculptures. Using modeling clay. The puppet is formed to just the shape desired.
At right is the beginnings of Mimi Van Der Pelt, the kitty cat gossip columnist.
Then celastic is cut to shape, softened in acetone and fitted into the mold created by the clay sculpture inside the plaster. This produces a celastic copy of the clay sculpture.
A plaster cast is created and the clay figure is dunked into the wet goo. When the plaster is cured the modeling clay is removed.
After assembling the two halves, sanding and a couple coats of acetone based cement The Florida Skunk Ape is ready for makeup and hair.
Below the handsome devel is all set for his first puppet show.
